TWO HOUSES, ROSE BAY - PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Located near the Rose Bay North village, the site is at the crest of a ridge overlooking Rose Bay and surrounding areas. Adjacent to brick and render interwar apartment buildings, each house draws upon design elements common to the area.
The houses are layered horizontally with each layer clad in a different material similar to a stone strata found in the natural world. This design expression allows the differing floor plates to co-exist in a complementary way.
Each house is a linear series of spaces with vertical connections between the four floors achieved at the staircases, while bringing in light from above.
The materials reinforce the notion of alternating layers of masonry and metal to create complexity of forms. The top copper clad floor resonates with the surrounding buildings in the street. The roofs are contrasting in form and open onto upper terraces looking out to the bowl adjoining Rose Bay.
