AYR APARTMENTS, BONDI BEACH – PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The site currently has a single storey motor mechanic workshop which is to be demolished and replaced by a mixed use apartment building. Located close to Six Ways and part of the Hall St local village centre, it sits within an area of numerous retail shops servicing the local community. The surrounding context is characterised by a mixture of residential and commercial buildings of various forms and ages.
Our design response was to provide overall building massing that is respectful of the existing context with reference to character, height and top floor front setbacks.
The building massing is broken into a bipartite arrangement with the lower, larger part being built to the street boundary and the top floor set back from street boundary.
The lower part has a cantilevered, tapered concrete awning providing shelter for cafe users and pedestrians. The first and second floor balconies are gently curved in plan referencing many similar shaped elements in the Bondi area.
The street facing balconies have operable fabric blinds which provide sun and light moderation for the occupants and ever changing visual interest from the street.
Building materials have been selected to be low maintenance with all external walls face brick and smaller elements being robust in nature such as stainless steel mesh and aluminium.
Construction is scheduled to commence in mid 2024.
