BARD HOUSE, WOOLLAHRA – PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project involved the extensive remodelling of a large inter-war house in Woollahra for a family of five. The existing house had some compromised alterations completed about 20 years ago, so we undid most of this work and focussed the design on creating a memorable open plan family room and kitchen facing the garden.

Our client had various artefacts from India including a magnificent carved front door and ornately carved timber columns. We incorporated the timber door leafs into a new entry and the columns into a new bay window seat, both adding special character to the rooms.

The alterations included making the house as environmentally sustainable as possible. Photovoltaic panels were installed on 60% of the roof and a battery storage system was added. The solar electricity is able to power the electric underfloor heating with no mains electricity required. There is no air conditioning so passive cooling is achieved through the use of cross ventilation and ceiling fans.

The project was completed in 2021.
