BABIDGE HOUSE, MOSMAN – PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project involved the extensive remodelling of a Federation style house in Mosman for a family of five. The house is a contributing item in a Heritage Conservation Area so great care was taken improving the amenity to contemporary standards while retaining the character of the original house.
Various small utility rooms which faced to the rear garden were demolished, replaced with a large family area focussed around the rear garden.
The family area consisted of an open plan living, dining and kitchen area with a steel framed bay window providing an intimate connection to the garden beyond.
The amenity of the rooms and bathrooms within the older part of the house were upgraded and added to with additional bathrooms, walk in robe and an ensuite.
The large underutilised roof space, common to Federation houses, was converted into a teenagers retreat.
Materials used for the new work were sympathetic to the original Federation house, with contrasting contemporary materials also used – such as a steel framed bay window, terrazzo benchtops and joinery elements.
The curved ceiling form of the new living areas gave an elevated feeling to the addition, similar to the high ceilings located within the original Federation rooms.
