HASTINGS APARTMENTS, BONDI BEACH – PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Situated on a busy corner amongst the Ben Buckler village shops, the project consists of retail shops on the ground floor with six apartments on the two upper floors. The site was tightly constrained by the neighbouring buildings and Council stated that a neighbour’s view corridor must be maintained so an inventive design response was required.

Our design response was to provide solid boundary to boundary building massing on the two lower floors with the third floor split into two separate parts enabling the maintenance of the view corridor. Between the two parts sits a coastal plant roof garden and external terraces.

On the ground floor a cantilevered, steel and concrete awning provides shelter for cafe users and pedestrians. The first and second floor balconies are inset with operable metal blinds providing sun and light moderation for the occupants and ever changing visual interest from the street.

Building materials have been selected to withstand the harsh salt soaked environment with all external walls white rendered brick and smaller elements made of marine grade stainless steel and corrosion resistant aluminium.
